Movie review: A Mile In His Shoes

A Mile In His Shoes  Is a movie based on the story of Mickey Tussler, a boy with Asperger's who was discovered by a coach who saw him pitching apples to the pigs, and decided to give him a chance at playing for the River Rats.
I enjoyed seeing Mickey gain confidence in his pitching skills, as well as finding friendship in his team mates.

I watched this movie with an 18 year old young lady and 21 year old young man, and they both said they thought the movie was "Amazing!" and "Inspiring!"
The father tried sheltering Mickey from getting hurt by the world, but it was just as bad for him to not have a life outside of what the father demanded. The coach, played by Dean Cain, saw potential in not only Mickey's pitching, but also as someone who needed to grow in life. The coach's own loss in life made him distant in life, but Mickey's faith helped him face it and come to terms with it.
I recommend this as a film to those who enjoy a good family movie; there is a fight scene and some yelling, so it's not for little children.

Thank you!
Blessings,
~Lori LC

Book Review: Cooper and Me and the Military

( book cover)

Cooper and Me and the Military is a book people of all ages will relate to.
The stories addresses how families are affected by parents being enlisted in the military.

Read about Cooper's friend, Trooper, who was adopted by Gracie and Joe and their parents, who both serve in the military. Find out how this family stays close despite being separated.

*A must-read during patriotic holidays and for anyone with friends and family in the military, this book helps children know, that even when loved ones aren’t with us, they still love us and think about us. This book, along with all the other books in the Cooper and Me series, includes these interactive features:
• A Special Memory Creation
• Life Lesson
• Connections
• Learning Together

Visit the website for coloring pages, and other ideas to share with kids.
There is also a store where you can purchase a plush Cooper, Cooper backpack and the other books in the series.

*The Memory Creation page encourages students
to write a letter to someone in the military expressing thanks.
This section allows them to think beyond the text of the story
and apply what they have learned to a real-life writing assignment.
The Connections section asks open-ended questions of the young reader so that he or she
can analyze and evaluate the experience of the main characters and form opinions about
the story based on his or her own experiences and feelings:
Have you ever missed someone? How does that feel? What are some things you can do to feel closer to people you love who are faraway?
What is your favorite memory with someone who doesn’t live close to you?

(*excerpts from Cooper's website)
There are several literacy questions to share and open discussions for those who share it.

Signs my son was here:

  • I put my boot on and find a matchbox car
  •  my sneaker has styrofoam peanuts in it
  • my chair was found against the fridge, so he could reach a popsicle without asking
  • the couch cushions are in a pile- and moving
  • the new toothpaste tube is nearly empty and he has really fresh breath,as he grins like an innocent angel.
  • the bath is filled with random items, such as a funnel, marbleworks tubes and plastic ARMY guys.
  • I no longer play chess or checkers, for lack of a full set.
  • chess and checker pieces are used for his roads and spy maneuvers
  • the fridge thermostat is on at various serttings throughout the week
  • candy wrappers are stuffed under the couch
  • the remote is finally found, also under the couch(which is how the wrappers were found)
These are the few things I remember from this week, and today. There's never a dull moment when there's a six year old boy around, and I love every one of those moments <3

New England winter weather :/

I have lived in New England all my life and still get depressed when it sleets out. I grew up in northern RI, where we had several feet of snow each year, along with bouts of icy rain and sleet. The difference is, I have spent most of my driving years here in NH. I have been in two accidents involving black ice, one from a slippery snow covered road and another not weather related.
I hate feeling like a big chicken when we are due for inclement weather. I shudder at the thought of being out there and out of control on slick roads. I need to take my daughter to college orientation tonight, but it's raining and the temp is right around 32 degrees. The possibility of freezing rain is growing, as is the knot in my stomach.
Having snow tires helps with snow traction, but not much is good when the roads are icy.
I'm just going for it and will take my time.
.....................................................................

so, the roads were wet but the temps hovered at 33/34.
my kid is signed up for 2 classes starting next week; one is the same night as mine so I'll have to get a sitter for when hubby is at work.
It's ironic that we're both taking gen ed classes and aren't sure where we're going to end up. indecisiveness must be genetic. lol
anyway, more winter weather is on the way and will be for about 12 more weeks.oh,goody...exactly how long my classes are that are 30 minutes away.I'll survive.just will take it slow and have supplies on hand .. just in case..

Book Review: Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25
was written for young adults, but is a good read for anyone interested in mystery and suspense.

This story kept me engrossed from start to finish!

Here are a few quoted from other readers:

"I just finished the book, ..., there are so many exciting parts in the book. I don't think that their are any boring parts in it. I recommended it to my friend and they are going get the book. I can't wait for the second book to come out!"
"this is one of the best books i have ever read. i give it 2 thumbs up i started reading it on a friday and finished it sunday. i cannot wait for the next book to come out hopefully very soon!"
"the book rocked, Richard Paul Evans at his best, i just finished it and can't wait for the second book"

An experiment that went wrong is being used against those it effected. They have to choose between the loyalty of their family and friends or the one who has provided everything for them.
This is a real page turner that you'll be sure to get a real charge out of =)
To win your copy, leave a message. that's all there is to it!

my-sort-of work out

ok, so I made kinda made a resolution to get up and move around more this year. I started by taking a walk around the block yesterday. It has been rather mild for NH, so there are no snow drifts to maneuver around, yet. The air was a cool 34 degrees F , just right for a wind breaker. It really did seem more like Autumn than winter, only without the beautiful vibrant colors and the scent that lingers when you kick the crunchy leaves about. I am one that likes just enough snow to make it winter, then it can go away til next year. So, this has been just right for me so far :) I didn't take a pic, but will next time.
Today, I went even further in my resolve to get moving by playing wii with the kids. First, we bowled, then boxed. (I stink at it!) I took the wii fitness age test and scored my mother's age :/  I also played the carnival games, which was way more fun than golfing. I feel good for following up on my resolution, but it sure has pooped me out. I think I need a nap :p
This is NOT  me, but around what the wii fitness age test said I was.lol. I hope to change this and cut it in half or more.  At least I'm making an effort. The thing I have to avoid is sitting on the edge of the couch while playing, cuz that's kinda like cheating :]

You've got to move it,move it!!
Blessings,
Lori

Diverticulosis:

Day 1
Symptoms preceeding calling doctor:

* Discomfort on left side of abdomen
* Pressure felt under left rib cage,
   especially at night.
* Discomfort when eating certain foods
During examination
-Doctor palpitated abdomen,
sounded hollow on right, full on left.
-Deep pressure exam was very uncomfortable
-Dr. knew right away what the diagnosis was
-> Diverticulosis. (see diagram below for an upclose look)

Treatment prescribed

1) Eat a higheer fiber diet!
2) take meds to fight infection in digestive tract:
meds include, Cipro, Flagil and MiraLax.
3) Drink more water

After the first day of taking meds, etc, I already slept better. That may also be due to not worrying about what the cause of my discomfort is anymore, or perhaps the antibiotics are already doing their job.

The doc said it will take about a week to ten days for it to be back to normal, but I'm wondering if this condition will continue.Since there are already pockets in my intestines, will the pressue and other factors build up in those areas in the future? There's no way to predict for sure, but we'll have to keep tabs on it on my future yearly physicals.

I'll continue writing about this until the treatment is up, then talk about ghow I think it all went.
Thanks for reading this. I welcome comments.
Blessings,
Lori

Day 3

Still feeling discomfort and nauseaus :/
Taking meds as prescribed. oops, gotta go take it now.

I have to eat and drink with it or I'll feel worse. a more serious thing that happened is the flagil got stuck in my throat when it started dissolving and I gagged  on it.yuck!
anyway, I hope this nausea and bloating go away soonso I can feel normal again.

Not one of my more interesting posts, but I'm sure I'm not the only one going through something unpleasant.

Have a lovely day,
<3 Lori

My -sort of- Resolution..

As this New Year rolled around this week, the talk of making resolutions became a hot topic. I listened to others talk about how they want to lose weight, get more active, quit soda for the year, work on projects. I started to consider what I would do if I made a resolution for the year. It would be like Lent, but for a whole year.
(from:drsgallagher.com)
I don't want to lose weight, but shift it. It should be more on my body as muscle rather than -well, whatever it is now, not so muscular. I don't drink stuff that's bad for me, unless you consider 2 cups of coffee bad, which it isn't :)
I don't smoke  and hardly ever drink, so what's left is either get more active or work on projects. As I sit in my comfy lawn chair in front of my laptop, the wood stove less than ten feet from me, I hardly 'feel' like becoming more active, but that is what I am choosing to do. I am going to make it a point to do something active each day, more than getting a snack, putting wood in the stove or playing games on my kindle. I am going to try (gulp) exercising. I'm not terribly out of shape, but not in top shape, either. I know I'll feel better and more alert when I get moving, it's just that darn Newton.
Newton's Laws state very clearly that a body in motion tends to stay in motion, and a body at rest tends to stay sitting in her lawn chair too long and keep blogging til she runs out of things to say.
or..more exactly..
  1. First law: The velocity of a body remains constant unless the body is acted upon by an external force.
  2. Second law: The acceleration a of a body is parallel and directly proportional to the net force F and inversely proportional to the mass m, i.e., F = ma.
  3. Third law: The mutual forces of action and reaction between two bodies are equal, opposite and collinear.
so, in order for me to start this, or continue from my past resolutions, I first have to get up and move. Then, make a good effort to be active each day. I will blog during the week to help me be more likely to follow through. we all know misery loves company, and what better place to share my misery than blogging here ;D
and since you are still reading this blog, I invite you back in a week to see if I'm still moving. If I don't post within a week, don't bother calling 911, it'll be too late.lol.
I'll even post pics to make it more interesting for me, and maybe I'll get creative.
ok, I won't go too crazy. I don't want to end up in traction.
This has been a very long-winded post, but I'm ending on this note:
It is my resolve,(which can mean either to come to a definite or earnest decision about, or   to split (a vector) into its components in specified directions . Either way, this shouild be interesting =)
 Have a great week,
Blessings,
Lori

2012 wishes..

The past few years have brought about several changes, including my daughter getting married then moving to SC. My other daughter graduated as my son finished Kindergarten. My husband and I celebrated 20 years of marriage, for better or worse :)  This year should be relatively calm compared to those changes.  I predict my son will finish off first grade with fewer time outs, my daughter will get her license and find a job in town, and I will gracefully turn 46 and not sob at the fact that I am closer to 50 than ever before.
My son and I are looking forward to his first over night camping experience at a local CGN, without his family by his side. I'm hoping to visit my parents in GA and sister's family in OK. I also hope to see my daughter in SC. They couldn't make it here for Christmas break, and may be here for Feb vacation =)
I need to take two more college courses to be para certified, two more difficult classes than I've had so far.. I'm sure it'll go well. I just want it to be done with already!
We'll see how it goes, my steps are ordered by God and all I need to do is follow them. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I pray you also have a terrific year! Let me know by leaving a comment now and then.
Blessings,
Lori
