The breakfast of kids =)

I tried sleeping in this morning, but my son (age 6) wanted food! I said I'd be downstairs in a few minutes. I guess he got tired of waiting because when I came down, he was already chomping on a chocolate chip cookie! I don't really blame him, a guy's gotta eat, and he was being independent.lol. It also may have been healthier than some of the cereals on the market today. I didn't get mad at him, but did tell him to get off the couch with it.  For actual breakfast,he ended up having waffles with real maple syrup and applesauce :)
The sugar should be kicking in any minute now...gotta go ;p

Dancing in the Kitchen

dancing with wives
At a lonely church altar,
I once took your hand
And we started our dance
As we often had planned

A few shaky steps,
And several bad starts
Then we moved as one flesh
To the beat of our hearts

Entwined then, we danced
In the rhythm of life
No one cut in
We were husband and wife

Till kids came and added
Their laughter and tears
We danced as a troupe
Through the space of some years

Now the group’s breaking up
And the end is in sight
And I wonder what happens
On that fateful night

When again I shall hold you
And ask if you’re ready
And on legs not so strong
And with hearts not so steady

We dance once again
Our children all grown
And we move to a rhythm
Uniquely our own

Till the drumbeats shall stop
And the music will end
And we find ourselves standing
Before God again

With bodies made new
Hearing strains of that choir
Knowing that you could
Have all you desire

If I held out my hand

Took yet one more chance
And asked you once more
If you cared to dance

Knowing that this one
Would never be through
Would you once again hold me
And whisper, “I do!

Author~Paul Spite

My kids grew up watching my husband and I dance in the kitchen. When they were young, we would lift them up to dance with us, and as they grew, they watched from the side lines to relish seeing their parents dancing together.
We danced recently at Christmas and just held each other close. After 20 years, we still got it =)

Kids' book Review, Cooper and Me, and the Winter Adventure

The winner of the book give away is
Terri Burns !! =)
 Congratulations, Terri!
You're going to enjoy sharing this book with your grand children <3

Cooper and Me
and the Winter Adventure!

How do you think it feels to be lost?

Getting separated from a loved one can be scary when a child doesn’t know what to do. Sometimes when children are playing with friends or are bored, they come up with ideas of activities that seem really fun. Often, they take that adventure or try that activity and don’t think of anything except how exciting it will be. Occasionally, this results in children getting hurt, lost, or scared. Children should know what to do if/when they get separated or lost from a loved one. They should begin developing good decision-making skills by exploring ways these characters and, by extension, they can be prepared and safe at all times.
What would you do if you were lost?
What kind of information should you know
in case you ever get separated from the person you are with?

Monique and Alexa approach these issues in a fun and memorable way kids will relate to. When I read this story with my six year old son, we talked about what we should do if we got lost, and what we should Not do. Cooper and his friends are the perfect media to teach kids these lessons. It will open dialogue for you to talk with your kids about these issues, too.  I'm sure you'll enjoy the fun story as much as we did, and perhaps re-read it a few times as he requested me to do, also! =) I love reading with my kids <3

Still learning..

I've been changing my blog a bit to get a sense of color and format. I'm still new to some of the gadgets and have tried a few to see how they look. The Fish gadget was fun at first, but got kinda boring after a few weeks. I changed the font a few times and probably will a few more times, depending on my mood or the blog theme.
I'd like to learn how to add a music player, but am still not sure how to do that, even after looking it up on theFAQ page. Not sure how to add a player and URL to the page. I'll comtinue to change and move it a few more times til I think it's good, then perhaps do it again. It's just my nature to change things up once in a while. It can be fun, too to see what else I can do on this blog site :)
If you have a blog, do you also make changes as I have?
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I am honored that you are here!
Have a lovely day!
Blessings,
~Lori

Power of a pawn: Amanda’s statement

Amanda’s statement that she gives to the police after she’s taken in.
###
A new man in a suit was asking most of the questions. She was going back over the evening’s events for what felt like the tenth time.
“I left work around a quarter to six. I went to Miss Marjorie’s house to pick up Little Tom and Krissie.” She asked her questioner, “By the way, who are you?”
He frowned and after glancing at the young man taking notes beside him, introduced himself for the third time as Frank Adams, Nashville Police, Homicide division.
“Does this Miss Marjorie watch your kids all the time?”
She answered, “Only for the past three weeks, since I started working. I was lucky to find her. She goes to my church.” He said something else, which Amanda asked him to repeat.
“No. There was nothing wrong with them. They argued all the way home, just like always.”
They had not arrived home till a little before eight o’clock, because she stopped at a family diner. Did they eat there often?
She smiled wearily, “The diner serves a child’s meal free with the purchase of an adult meal. You look for bargains like that Mister, when you have chil…” At that point her voice choked off. She whispered, “I couldn’t handle the thought of cooking.”
There was a respectful silence from Frank.
“When we got home, I stopped in the driveway. The kids weren’t arguing any more. I think they had just been hungry and cranky. We stopped in the driveway just to look at the house. There was still a little of the sunset left behind it. Krissie commented on how pretty our little house was. I thought things were looking up.”
Frank gently urged her to go on. “Take your time, but try to remember all you can, Mrs. Delaney.”
She was finding that concentration thing to be harder every minute. “I parked in the garage. As soon as I turned off the car, I shut the overhead door. Junior got out and turned on the garage light. Then the kids went inside. I had to gather the food and my stuff. There was a carry-out box left.”
There was a long pause while she tried to focus. “I put my things on the counter in the kitchen. I put the food in the fridge. An extra key was on the counter and I put it away. Then I started to go through the bills. There were so many. Junior and Krissie came back in.”
Her voice began to falter. “They were arguing about who would pick the show to watch. I guess the food wore off.”
She began to cry.
“It was okay that they argued. I did not mind. They are really good kids. Really! We started to talk about it. The room started doing crazy things. … Then I was lying on the floor. I smelled onions, so I guess I am not that good at cleaning. Then you guys came.”
The detective waited patiently for her to calm down again. He asked her to go over the evening again. He needed to know if anything had been out of place.
Amanda began to cry. “I am absolutely positive. I did not hear or see anything different or wrong before I passed out.”
Frank asked if she felt an intruder had hit her.
“There is no way anyone attacked me. My kids were looking right at me and there would have been no way for anyone to get behind me. The doctor said the bruise and lump on my face are from hitting the counter on the way down.”
Again she told him, “We were talking, and then I was lying on the carpet. Why do you keep questioning me? I need help and all I am getting is questions. Why don’t you believe me?
Where are my kids?” He moved up beside her, prepared to support her upright if needed.
“Mrs. Delaney? We took your children to the hospital. They have been dead for quite some time.”
The present went away again.

Power of a Pawn, Book Excerpt!! from the author, Paul Spite

The Power of a Pawn will be released this coming Friday, December 16, 2011. Here is an excerpt called “Scrambled Eggs” to whet your appetite.
###
The lady stood alone in a very small room, bathed in cold blue fluorescent light. The remains of that morning’s breakfast were mostly in the commode, but some had splattered on her suit. As if her life did not already contain enough heartache, this sickness was surely getting old.
Beneath the pallor of her face and the misery lining it, the woman was pretty. She had once laughed often with her husband and children. That was all behind her. Now she only let her guard down in the presence of those she trusted. That might be two whole people.
No, it was three, though she did not know the third very well.
She had met him just twice, and then only for a few minutes each time. Those meetings had been under trying circumstances, to say the least.
She would have reflected a bit more on the past, but the present was again rising in her throat.
As she gripped the stainless steel sink for support, what came up was as tasteless as it had been going down.
She thought hard about anyone she might have recently contacted, who could have carried a bug to her. There were not many. None of her roommates showed any signs of illness. Granted, after the first time she lost her breakfast, they were avoiding her like she had a plague. This was not a good place to become ill.
It was totally inappropriate, but she nonetheless began to smile.

Book Review: The Power of A Pawn, by Paul Spite

Amanda was always running, she ran to think, to escape home, to face her Father's death, then her husband's. When she needs to run most, she can't. Prison won't allow mothers who kill their children to run free.
When she faced trouble now she could only run away in her mind, perhaps this is why she can't remember strangling her son and daughter.  Is her faith in God real, or an escape? Or, was it her late husband's father that caused all the mayhem? Since money is so important to him, maybe he didn't want them to inherit any money.
There are so many interesting facets to this story! It kept me on the edge of my seat til the end. The beginning seemed fragmented as the story lines were drawn out, but once it gained steam, it was an awesome book!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an intriguing story that isn't predictable. You'll be thinking about it long after reading it =)

Happy December!!

My family,with Mom in the middle,December 25,1992
 Ah, December!
A month of when people shop for others(and themselves), send cards(real or virtual), talk about trees(real or fake) and decorations. It's also a time when local shelters are given extra supplies, as well as other places that help those in need. I like the season the most because it opens doors to talk about the first gift of Christmas, Jesus <3  We see nativity scenes depicting the night Christ was born, along with the angels who proclaimed His holy birth and how He is called Emanuel, God with us.
Concerts sing songs of His holy birth and God's love toward us <3 I do love this time of the year; the colors, the aromas, the music. For me, it really is The most wonderful time of the year !!
What is your favorite thing about this time of the year?
Any favorite food or tradition?
Blessings,
~Lori
